Abstract

  1. Despite possessing a wealth of natural resources and diverse ecosystems, the ocean faces numerous pollution-related challenges. Pollution, defined as the discharge of unwanted and often hazardous waste, seriously jeopardizes the integrity of the Earth's support systems and the survival of human cultures. Though the global community strives through large-scale research initiatives like GEOTRACES, IMBER, and SOLAS, which have significantly increased the available data, understanding of ocean systems remains limited and unevenly distributed. This review aims to present knowledge about ocean pollution, particularly in Nigerian waterways.
